To educate the public about the importance of prevention and screening, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) developed the Helping You Take Care of Yourself curriculum in 2006. In particular, the curriculum was targeted towards Massachusetts’ underserved populations in an effort to raise their rates of preventative health screening. Initially, the curriculum had two units—breast health and cervical health. A cardiovascular health unit was added in 2007, and colorectal and prostate health units were added in 2009. The curriculum was designed as a “train-the-trainer” model, whereby community-based organizations (CBOs) were trained to carry out educational workshops with members of their community.
