摘要 | In this issue of AEI’s Political Report, we examine how Americans feel about the economy, trade, and President Donald Trump’s stewardship of them. We also look at views about the pervasiveness of sexual harassment in the US. We round out the issue by examining people’s feelings about money in politics. Is the economy softening? The polls provide mixed messages about public views on the economy, but several, including the University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment and a new Quinnipiac University poll, show growing concern about its health. Trump usually receives higher positive ratings on handling the economy than handling his job overall. Views about how he is handling trade, tariffs, the budget deficit, and taxes are all more negative than positive (Politico/Morning Consult, Economist/YouGov). Democrats and Republicans believe free trade has generally been good for America (CBS News/YouGov) and that imposing tariffs hurts rather than helps the US economy (Fox News). A quarter think Trump’s approach with China will succeed, while 44 percent think it won’t (CBS/YouGov). Sexual harassment: An update on attitudes Americans continue to view sexual harassment as a serious problem in the US (Economist/YouGov). In a 2018 Ipsos/NPR poll, half of all women said they had “personally experienced” it. In a Gallup survey, 48 percent said they had been a “victim” of it. Women and men see harassment as widespread in many industries and institutions, including Hollywood, colleges and universities, media companies, the US military, and the political parties. Fewer say it is a serious problem where they have worked. (Economist/YouGov). Business gets slightly better marks than other groups about responding to it (Public Religion Research Institute). In 2017 and 2019 Gallup surveys, roughly identical percentages of women say harassment in the workplace is a major problem. Two-thirds of men in 2017 and 53 percent in 2019 give this response. Sixty-one percent of women compared to 46 percent of men say people in the workplace are not sensitive enough about it (Gallup). Money in politics Americans are deeply dissatisfied with the nation’s campaign finance laws (Gallup), and 46 percent say the system should be completely rebuilt (CBS News/New York Times). Most say the political system is distorted by money. Eighty-two percent in an AP/NORC poll say contributions from corporations, special interest groups, and individuals directly influence elected officials’ decisions. In a Pew Research Center poll, 74 percent say it is very important for the country that people who give a lot of money do not have more political influence than others. Only 26 percent in another question believe that describes the country well today (Pew Research Center). People say it is acceptable for candidates to use their own money for campaigns. They are less supportive of public financing from the federal government. To view past issues of AEI’s Political Report, visit our archive here. |
