摘要 | This paper is an attempt to set some basic parameters and outline the scope for population and environment research. After briefly reviewing the present state of theory, the paper outlines an integrated theory of population, development, and environment. The proposed theory presents population and environment in a "transition paradigm." This theory builds on the demographic transition theory and integrates various existing theoretical ideas into a dynamic framework. Demographic transition theory has been modified by incorporating environmental dimensions and rethinking the relationships between demographic processes and development as they interact with environmental changes. The empirical evidence gathered from various sources provides support for the relationships hypothesized in the theory. The proposed theory is a generalized explanation of population-development-environment relationships and encompasses a wide variety of circumstances. For an in-depth understanding of population-environment interactions in an area, detailed case studies must be carried out at appropriate levels of aggregation incorporating the contextual idiosyncrasies. |
